Time Management Tips for Working Moms

Being a busy working mom is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. I’ve been living this mom-life for 25 years and I’ve experienced an interesting combination of both feelings with two girls - now 25 and 16. In addition to working diligently to maintain your sanity, you’re balancing the demands of work, family, and personal life, and it can be tough to stay on top of everything. I’m convinced, however, that with the right strategies and tools, you can improve your time management and make your life just a bit easier…which we know ultimately impacts your ability to do all the things (or at least some of them). 

Here are some time management tips for you to consider along this journey:

  1. Make a to-do list: Write down all of your tasks for the day, including both work and personal tasks. This helps you prioritize your tasks and ensures you don’t forget anything important. I’ll take this a step further and share what’s working for me these days. I do a brain dump every Sunday in my Cloth & Paper notebook. I jot down everything from appointments I need to schedule to my daughter’s school events to errands I need to run…and just about everything in between. I then work from that master list and only write things I’ve completed in my daily planner. My brain loves it! Let me know if you’d like me to record a video to share.
  2. Use a calendar: Keep a daily or weekly calendar to schedule appointments, meetings, and important deadlines. This helps you stay organized and avoid double-booking yourself. I use a combination of my digital planner (I’m loving THISS planner’s setup) and my Google calendar.
  3. Get up earlier: Try waking up earlier in the morning so you can get a head start on your day. This allows you to get some tasks done before the kids wake up and the day gets busy. How you use that time is up to you, but I love listening to a podcast, meditating, and/or listening to an audiobook. 
  4. Delegate tasks: Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to others, whether it’s at work or at home. This frees up your time and reduces your stress levels. Assign it and let it go. The letting go piece is still a challenge for me because I like the dishwasher loaded a certain way and I like laundry done a certain way. Is it just me?
  5. Take breaks: Regular breaks throughout the day help you recharge and reduce stress. Whether it’s a quick walk outside, a few minutes of meditation, or a cup of coffee, taking breaks is essential for your overall wellness. My personal favorite is a 20-minute nap!
  6. Use technology (as needed): There are tons of tools and apps available to help you manage your time and stay organized. Consider using tools like Trello, Asana, or Google Calendar to help you keep track of your tasks and appointments. Just be sure to disconnect in advance of bedtime. 
  7. Set boundaries: It’s important to set boundaries between work and personal life. Turn off notifications after work hours and limit work-related activities outside of work hours to help reduce stress and increase your productivity. It’ll be there tomorrow. Pull yourself away and turn the power off.

These are just a few of my favorite tips for managing time as a working mom, which we all know is challenging. By prioritizing your tasks, delegating tasks to others, and taking care of yourself, you can improve your time management skills and achieve a balanced life. Remember, success on your terms means taking care of both your professional and personal life. It’s totally doable.
