As the holiday season approaches, job seekers often find themselves in a bit of a conundrum. Should they press pause on their job search, assuming that everyone is too caught up in holiday festivities to hire, or should they continue their efforts, hoping to stand out amidst the holiday hustle and bustle?
Believe it or not, the holiday season can present a great opportunity to advance your career. While it's true that decision-makers might be out of the office or preoccupied with holiday preparations, there are strategic ways to navigate this time effectively and set yourself up for success in the coming year.
Let’s chat about three of my expert tips for making the most of your job search during the holidays.
Tip 1: Embrace Patience as Your Greatest Virtue
The holiday season is known for its ability to throw even the most organized schedules into complete chaos. Many hiring managers and recruiters are rushing to use their remaining paid time off, squeezing in last-minute vacations (not me because I take vacations throughout the year), or simply taking some time to relax with family after what has proven to be quite an interesting year for hiring. I hate to break it to you, but as a job seeker, your application or resume might not get the immediate attention you'd receive during other parts of the year. It's just what it is.
Please don't let this discourage you. Instead, remind yourself that patience is your greatest virtue. Use this time to fine-tune your job search strategy including critical tasks such as: updating your resume, refining your LinkedIn profile, and practicing your interview skills with a professional. This extra time will allow you to position yourself as a stellar candidate when employers become more active in their hiring process in the new year.
Tip 2: Don't Decline Holiday Invitations
Holiday parties and gatherings are a staple of the season. While you might be tempted to decline an invitation to focus on your job search, these events are excellent opportunities to establish new connections. You never know who you might meet. ;-)
Attend these events with the intent of mingling, listening, and exchanging ideas in your field. I highly recommend you be prepared to provide a brief and compelling introduction that mentions your career aspirations as this will ensure you leave a lasting and relevant impression. Many conversations start with, "So, what do you do?" Use this as a platform to not only share your current position but also to express your goals and enthusiasm for the industry. Put some time on my calendar so we can tighten this up for you.
And last but definitely not least….
Tip 3: Focus On What You Can Control
As you might have figured out by now, this year has been exceptionally competitive for job seekers. During this time, I recommend to my clients that they focus on what they can control.
Consider strengthening your position in the market by enhancing your skills and qualifications. Consider pursuing certifications, online courses, or training programs that will make you a standout candidate in the job market.
Might I also recommend that you seek professional guidance from a career coach who understands your unique journey? We can provide you with expert advice tailored to your specific goals, review your job search strategy, and provide a personalized action plan to help you bring your A-game. Even if hiring is slow during the holidays, using this time to equip yourself with the right skills and knowledge can make all the difference when opportunities begin to emerge in the new year.
I’ll leave you with this…
Job searching during the holidays doesn't have to be an uphill battle you tackle alone. By embracing patience, attending holiday gatherings with an open mind, and focusing on what you can control, you can make the most of this time and set the stage for career success in the upcoming year.
Don't be discouraged by the holiday lull in hiring or even this super competitive job market. Instead, use it as a strategic advantage to position yourself as a top candidate.
Please don’t feel like you need to take a break from your job search. Use this period wisely to stay ahead in your career journey.
