We’ve all seen the headlines. Layoffs are making the news every week and with each announcement, I think of the impacted individuals and their families. So let’s talk about something many of us have experience with. Yes, I've been there, navigating the maze of unemployment during the Great Recession.
Please know that you're not alone and you absolutely will get through this challenging season. Statistics show that 40% of Americans have faced a layoff. So, grab a cup of tea or coffee, and let's chat about six practical steps to not just survive but thrive through this transition.
Take a Deep Breath and Reflect:
First things first, take a moment to catch your breath. Inhale, exhale and give yourself a moment to process those swirling emotions. It's a lot, I know. Consider grabbing a journal and jotting down your thoughts. Documenting your thoughts and daily job search activities here could be therapeutic and incredibly useful.

You're Not Alone:
Remember, you're not alone in this journey. The layoff rollercoaster is one many of us have ridden and it can sometimes feel lonely. We've all come out on the other side stronger. So, while it might feel like a lonely ride at this moment, statistically, you're in the company of many resilient professionals who've faced and conquered a layoff.
Resume and LinkedIn Updates:
Now, let's talk practicalities. It's time to polish that resume and give your LinkedIn a mini-makeover. These are very critical tools in your job search, so tackling this as soon as possible is highly recommended. Your resume is a snapshot of your professional story and LinkedIn is your digital handshake. Don't forget to change your LinkedIn status to 'Open to Work.' It's a clear signal to recruiters, like myself, looking for top talent that is available to start working.
My Suggestions:
Budget Check and Outreach:
Money matters, and during a layoff, it's super important to reassess your budget. Reach out to service providers; let them know about your situation. Many are willing to help with payment arrangements or assistance for those temporarily unemployed. Financial stability is a game-changer in your job search. You don’t want that phone to start ringing off the hook with bill collectors, so get in front of it to maintain your sanity.
My Suggestions:
Leverage Your Network:
Time to tap into the power of your network. Who in your circle can help shorten the length of your unemployment? Who knows someone in leadership? Compile a list and start reaching out strategically. Networking is not just a buzzword; it's a lifeline during periods of transition like this one.
My network is truly the reason I was able to secure a new role before my severance ran out after my 2008 layoff. It is actually how I was able to secure several jobs in my career journey, so please consider putting some serious thought into this step.
Income Generation Strategies:
Now let's think about how you can get creative with income generation while you navigate your job search. Can you sell items you no longer need? Is there a side hustle you've been thinking about, but haven’t quite taken serious action on? Financial stability is so important and exploring income-generating options adds another layer of security and sanity.
