How to Keep Your Career Moving Forward (Even When You're Feeling Stuck)

career change

Can we have a serious chat for a moment? I know that feeling stuck in your career is one of the most frustrating experiences. You know you’re capable of more, but no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to make progress in the right direction. If you’re nodding along right now, please know you’re not alone. Many ambitious women find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of where to go next. They want more in terms of higher pay, flexibility, and a job that aligns with their passions, but they feel like they’ve run out of options.

So, what’s the solution?

How do you keep your career moving forward when you’re feeling stuck?

Get comfy while I share some career advice to help you re-energize your professional journey, whether your goal is to land a six-figure salary or you’re simply trying to figure out your next step. I’ve been where you are and I know how overwhelming it can feel.

Know this, friend….

You have more options than you think.

Step 1: Recognize Why You’re Feeling Stuck

Before we jump into strategy, it’s important to get clear on why you’re feeling this way in the first place.

Are you bored with your current role?

Do you feel like your skills aren’t being used to their fullest potential?

Or maybe you’re just burned out and ready for something different.

One of the most common reasons women feel stuck is that they’re in roles that don’t align with their true interests or strengths. I see this with my clients more often than not. You might have a degree and experience in one thing, but your gut tells you that it’s not the ideal field for you. Or maybe you’re telling yourself that without a degree, your current job is the only one you can get.

This is where mindset plays a HUGE role. The worst thing you can do is convince yourself that you don’t have options. You do, and sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective to see what’s possible.

Step 2: Connect with a Career Coach (Yes, This Is a Game-Changer)

When you’re stuck in a career rut, it’s common to feel like you’re spinning your wheels, applying for jobs, or hoping for a promotion that never comes. One of the most effective ways to get unstuck is by connecting with a career coach and I’m not just saying that because I am one.

A career coach provides clarity. They help you identify your strengths, create a customized action plan, and guide you toward roles that align with your strengths, skills, experience, and goals. It’s not just about giving you advice; it’s about empowering you with the confidence and tools to take the next step. Speaking from experience, having the right conversations with the right people can be life-changing.

Step 3: Take a Good Look at Your Skills

Once you have clarity about why you’re stuck, it’s time to take stock of your skills. What are you great at? What do you enjoy doing? What skills do you need to develop to take your career to the next level?

Many women I’ve worked with have incredible experience and skills, but they downplay their abilities or think they’re only valuable in one industry. Here’s a reality check: your skills are transferable. You may have been working in marketing for the past decade, but that doesn’t mean you can’t transition into another field that excites you. Or maybe you’re in finance but secretly dream of moving into a creative role.

Taking a good look at your skill set will give you the confidence to explore other roles, even if they seem outside your current industry. Don’t box yourself in because of your experience or your degree.

Step 4: Expand Your Network

Networking is often overlooked when people feel stuck in their careers, but it’s one of the most powerful tools you have. Approximately 75% of the roles I’ve held in my career came from people in my network reaching out to me.

The relationships you build over time can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Whether you’re connecting with peers, mentors, or potential employers, having meaningful conversations with the right people can lead to new opportunities.

I remember feeling stuck early in my career until I spoke up about what I was interested in. I didn’t stay quiet, and eventually, that bold conversation led to the role I wanted. So, don’t underestimate the power of putting yourself out there and letting your network know you’re looking for something new.

Step 5: Set New Career Goals and Make a Plan

If you’re feeling stuck, chances are you haven’t set clear career goals in a while. It’s time to revisit where you want to go and make a plan to get there. Whether you want to land a six-figure role, pivot into a new industry, or work remotely, you need to have a clear roadmap.

This is where a career coach can come in handy again, helping you break down your long-term goals into manageable steps. If you insist on the DIY approach, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are your top career priorities right now?
  • What additional skills or experiences do you need to achieve your next goal?
  • What’s your timeline for making this happen?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you can start taking intentional steps toward the career you truly want.

Step 6: Stay Open to Change

One of the biggest roadblocks to moving forward in your career is fear of change. Whether it’s fear of failing in a new role, not making enough money, or the unknown, these thoughts get in the way of you moving forward to your next level. Staying in a role that makes you miserable isn’t the safe option because all it does is keep you stuck.

It’s okay to explore new career opportunities, even if they seem like a stretch.

It’s okay to pivot into a different industry if you feel unfulfilled in your current one.

And it’s okay to ask for help along the way.

If any of this resonates with you, consider scheduling a free 20-minute consultation with me. We’ll chat about where you are, where you want to go, and how we can get you there together.

I’ll leave you with this….

Feeling stuck in your career is frustrating, but it’s not a dead end. Whether you need a fresh perspective, a new plan, or just someone to remind you of your worth, YOU HAVE OPTIONS, and don’t you dare tell yourself otherwise.

All it takes is a little clarity, the right network, and the courage to take the next step.
