Expert Tips to Overcome Job Dissatisfaction As A Working Mom

career goals and advice job search tips May 23, 2024

Let me start by saying this Virtual Six-Figure Mom Community is a safe space and in this safe space, I encourage each community member to acknowledge their feelings for what they are. We do not suppress our feelings and plaster on a happy face for each other. We feel all the things and give each other and ourselves grace.

With that said, let's be real—there are days when the alarm feels like your nemesis and the thought of rolling out of bed and heading to work triggers all sorts of not-so-amazing feelings. If you're a working mom navigating this space, you're not alone.

My hope with this particular blog post is that we explore the common sentiments around not liking your job while also providing you with actionable steps and journaling prompts to help you shift from feeling stuck to finding the spark that reignites your passion.

So let’s chat for a few minutes...

1-Acknowledge Your Feelings

It's okay not to love your job every single day. I’ve been working for over 30 years (not for the same company) and there have been countless days when I absolutely did not love my job. I think back to my favorite employer/team/leader and there were a few days even there when I just didn’t love it. I didn’t even like it. It took everything in me to log in and get started some days.

Start by acknowledging your feelings without judgment from the lens of your humanness. Can you even consider yourself a human if you always love your 8-5?? LOL!

Journaling prompt: What specific aspects of your job make you feel dissatisfied?

2-Identify the Source

Understanding the root cause of your dissatisfaction is critical. We often talk about knowing your WHY in the positive sense, but it’s also important to understand WHY you aren’t feeling great about your current situation.

Is it the nature of the work?

The company culture?

The leadership team?

The lack of growth opportunities?

It’s not enough to say you’re just not feeling it. What exactly about it doesn’t work for you?

Journaling prompt: If you could change one thing about your job right now, what would it be?

3-Reflect on Your Goals

Revisit your career goals and aspirations. First, have you taken the time to put those in writing with a clear action plan? If you do nothing else before you close out of this browser window, grab a sheet of paper and WRITE YOUR CAREER GOALS.

Are you aligning your current role with your long-term vision?

Journaling prompt: Where do you see yourself professionally in the next two to three years and does your current job contribute to that vision?

4-Focus on What You Can Control

My clients will tell you that I consistently remind them to focus on what they can control. While we all understand there are aspects beyond our control, identify areas where you can make a positive impact. Whether it's taking on new projects, initiating collaborations, or upskilling using platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, or many others, proactivity can be empowering.

Journaling prompt: List three actions you can take in the next 30 days to improve your work situation.

5-Seek Support and Feedback

Share your feelings with a trusted colleague, friend, mentor, or career coach. We can offer insights specific to your current situation and suggest realistic avenues for improvement.

Journaling prompt: What advice would you give to a friend feeling the way you do about their job?

6-Explore New Opportunities

If your dissatisfaction persists, it might be time to seriously explore new opportunities. Is there a role or industry that aligns better with your passion and skills?

This is not a step to be taken lightly, so my suggestion is to strongly consider step five before you dive into such exploration.

Again, it's super easy to put some time on my calendar to chat and determine how I might be able to lend my 12+ years of recruiting/HR/coaching experience in support along your journey. The schedule is HERE.

Journaling prompt: What excites you about a potential new role or industry?
