Crushing Imposter Syndrome: Practical Tips for Career-Driven Moms

As a busy HR professional and a single mom of two, I know firsthand the challenges that come with juggling work and motherhood. One of the most common struggles that working moms face (myself included sometimes) is imposter syndrome, which can prevent us from reaching our full potential in the workplace.

Imposter syndrome is a feeling of inadequacy or self-doubt that makes you believe you aren't qualified or capable of doing your job. It can be especially prevalent in working moms who feel like they have to work twice as hard to prove themselves in a male-dominated workplace! You are not alone! Imposter syndrome affects even the most successful and accomplished women.

Here are some tips and strategies to help you overcome imposter syndrome and boost your confidence in the workplace:

  1. Recognize your achievements: Take a moment to reflect on all the hard work you've put in to get to where you are today. Make a list of your accomplishments, no matter how big or small you might think they are. Recognize that you earned your position through your own merit and hard work and don't you ever minimize that!
  2. Challenge negative self-talk: Please don't let your inner critic take over. Whenever you hear that negative voice in your head telling you you're not good enough, challenge it with positive affirmations. Remind yourself that you are capable, smart, and deserving of your position. Download the printable below and reference the included affirmations regularly.
  3. Seek support: Talk to a trusted colleague, mentor, or your therapist about your feelings of self-doubt. Sometimes just hearing someone else's perspective can help you gain a new perspective and boost your confidence. I am a huge proponent of therapy at all times, not just when we feel like we're struggling. 
  4. Embrace failure: Failure is not a reflection of your abilities. It's an opportunity to learn and grow. Please don't be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Embrace them as part of the learning process. As a matter of fact, I challenge you to be intentional about failing forward as an actual strategy. You might be surprised!
  5. Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself is crucial for building confidence and resilience. Make time for fitness and hobbies that bring you joy. Surround yourself with positive influences that uplift and inspire you. Most importantly, make time to disconnect. No electronics. No planning. Focus on your breath and try a bit of meditation. 10/10 stars from me!

Remember, imposter syndrome is a common feeling that many of us experience. With the right mindset and support, though, I believe you can overcome self-doubt and achieve your goals.
