Once upon a time there was a nineteen year old mom named Kristina who lived in her hometown of Queens, NY with her newborn. She was a single mother earning minimum wage in New York and relied on her amazing family for childcare. She eventually began working temp roles as a receptionist for many firms in Midtown Manhattan that paid more than minimum wage and it was then that she realized she was capable of increasing her income more than she ever imagined.
The moral of the story?
As a single mother, there is no denying that balancing work and family can be incredibly challenging as you try to make ends meet with one income. What if you could increase your earning potential, providing more financial stability for yourself and your family?
I know it's possible because I did it!
Here are a just three ways to increase income:
Ask for a raise from your current employer.
One of the simplest ways to increase your earning potential is by asking for a raise from your current employer. If you have been performing well and taking on additional responsibilities, you may be in a good position to negotiate a higher salary. Do your research (Glassdoor is a great place to start) to determine what a fair salary would be for someone in your position, and be prepared to make a case for why you deserve a raise. Change jobs.
If your current employer is not able to offer you a raise, it may be time to consider changing jobs. So many HR professionals in my network would agree that parting ways with your current employer can work in your favor if an increase in income is what you seek. Look for positions that pay more and offer better benefits, and don't be afraid to negotiate when it comes to salary and other perks like flexibility. Keep in mind that changing jobs can be a great way to gain new skills and experience, which can make you even more valuable in the job market.
Consider another career path.
If you're not finding success in your current field, it may be worth considering another career path. Take some time to think about your skills and interests, and explore career options that align with them. It may require additional education or training, but making a career change can lead to higher earning potential and greater job satisfaction. A critical part of the work I do with my clients involves the completion of a strengths assessment and a deep dive into what brings them joy.
