I started working remotely over a decade ago. Remind me to tell you the story of exactly how I landed my first work-from-home job.
But first... In today's ever-evolving job market, securing remote work opportunities can be challenging, especially when competition is fierce. If you're an ambitious woman looking to advance your career and secure a higher-paying remote position, you're in the right place.
As an experienced HR/recruiting professional and career coach, I understand the unique challenges you face.
Let's chat for a moment about what I believe to be seven actionable tips to help you find remote work in this market:
- Join Remote Job Email Communities: Stay ahead of the curve by joining email communities such as this one that share legitimate remote job openings. These communities will save you precious time and effort in your job search and present you with roles you may have otherwise never known about.
- Network Strategically and Genuinely: Networking is key in any job search, but especially when you're looking for a remote opportunity. Leveraging online platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in remote-first organizations is important and I encourage you to engage with their posts and join relevant groups to expand your network. Beyond that, I challenge you to take those conversations offline when possible because that's where the magic happens.
- Follow Remote-First Companies: Identify remote-first companies on LinkedIn and follow them. Engage with their content regularly to demonstrate your interest and gain visibility within these organizations. You want them to know your name.
- Engage with Recruiters: Take the initiative to engage with recruiters from remote-first companies. Comment on their posts, share valuable insights, and express your interest in remote opportunities. Again, when possible, invite them to a virtual tea or coffee chat. You won't get their attention each time, but this is a practice that has the potential to pay dividends.
- Join Talent Communities: Many remote-friendly organizations have talent communities you can find on their Careers/Jobs pages. Joining these communities ensures you're among the first to know about new job postings and initiatives. You can typically request daily emails to stay in the know on new roles that align with your career aspirations.
- Gain Remote Experience: Consider volunteering or taking on freelance projects that allow you to gain remote work experience. Companies value candidates with proven remote capabilities and it's actually super easy to get this.
- Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile: Showcase your skills and remote work experience on your LinkedIn profile. Use targeted keywords related to remote work to attract recruiters looking for remote talent. The words you use on both your resume and LinkedIn profile matter.
We've covered a good bit, so I'll leave you with this...
By implementing these strategies, you'll be well-positioned to navigate the competitive remote job market and secure the role you deserve. Remember, I'm here to support you every step of the way.
