Let’s have a heart-to-heart. If you’re in the middle of a job search, you probably already know it can feel overwhelming, especially if your goal is to advance to a higher-paying position or find a role that offers the remote flexibility you’re looking for. And if you’re not 100% sure which direction to take—maybe you’re thinking of pivoting into a new field or returning to the corporate world after running your own business—this process can be even more intimidating.
Here’s what I believe to be true…
Job search anxiety is common, but building your confidence can change the entire experience. Instead of feeling like you’re at the mercy of potential employers, you can shift into a more empowered mindset that says, “I’m qualified, I have something valuable to offer, and I won’t settle.” EVERYTHING changed in my career when I started speaking that way. EVERYTHING!
Let’s chat about five ways you can stay confident and motivated, no matter how long or exhausting your search feels.
1. Prepare Thoroughly (But Don’t Aim for Perfection)
One of the best ways to boost your confidence is by being prepared, yet many of us fall into the trap of wanting to perfect everything before we even apply for a job. If that’s you, And yes, I said “us.” I understand you want to present the best possible version of yourself, but aiming for perfection can become a roadblock.
Here’s what to do instead:
- Refresh Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile: Make sure your skills, experience, and achievements are up to date. If you have remote experience or specific projects you’re proud of, highlight them. If you’re targeting a new field, emphasize transferable skills. Need help? Grab the resume revamp course by clicking here.
- Research the Companies You’re Interested In: When you know a company’s mission, culture, and recent projects, you’re in a better position to speak confidently about how you’d fit in. Open a new document on your laptop or phone and organize your findings.
- Practice Interviewing: Run through common questions, focusing on how your skills align with the role you want. A little rehearsal can go a long way in calming your nerves.
Your goal is to feel prepared enough to speak honestly and confidently about your qualifications. Trying to do everything perfectly can hold you back. You’re a work in progress and that’s okay.
2. Build a Hype Squad
We all need at least one or two people in our corner who can hype us up when the going gets tough because, in life, it will. Let’s call them your hype squad. Think of these folks as the friends, mentors, or family members who remind you why you’re amazing at what you do. They’re there to cheer you on, celebrate your wins (big or small), and offer a listening ear when you hit roadblocks, which you likely will.
- Identify Your Cheerleaders: Pick one or two people who genuinely want to see you succeed. This could be a close friend, a past colleague, or even a mentor who’s guided you in the past. Over time, you’ll identify more, but start with one or two for now.
- Reach Out Regularly: Schedule quick check-ins where you can share progress, challenges, and small wins. A ten-minute call can completely shift your mindset, especially after a tough interview or a long day of applying for jobs.
- Accept the Help: If you’re someone who feels like you should “handle it all” on your own (been there, done that), remember that leaning on your hype squad isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of wisdom. No one achieves career growth alone. NO ONE!
When job searching, it’s easy to get discouraged or question your abilities. A supportive text or encouraging word from your hype squad might be the secret weapon you need to keep going.
3. Leverage Small Wins to Build Momentum
Gaining confidence doesn’t have to come from landing the perfect job right away. You might need to read that again. Sometimes, it’s the series of small wins that keep you inspired and remind you of your worth.
- Send That LinkedIn Message: Reaching out to someone new might seem minor, but it’s actually a step toward expanding your network. That small act of bravery can spark deeper conversations and potential leads. Struggling with LinkedIn? Grab my free guide by clicking here.
- Celebrate Each Interview Invite: Even if you don’t get the job, landing an interview is proof that your resume and application stood out. Take a minute to appreciate that. And this is where your hype squad comes in. :)
- Acknowledge Your Efforts: Completing a challenging application or updating your portfolio are wins, too. Don’t brush them off.
Every small win acts like a confidence boost, showing you that progress is possible. Confidence grows each time you realize you did something you were initially hesitant about, and it turned out okay—or even great.
4. Use Affirmations (and Record Them!)
Yes, affirmations might sound cheesy to some, but trust me, they work. Sometimes, you just need that gentle reminder that you are capable, qualified, and moving in the right direction. Speaking as someone who’s coached many ambitious women through various transitions, I’ve seen firsthand how affirmations can shift your mindset.
- Write Them Down: Pick one or two statements that resonate with you, such as “My skills are valuable,” or “I am capable of thriving in a higher-paying, remote role.” Then, put them where you’ll see them daily—like your bathroom mirror or the lock screen on your phone.
- Record Them: Consider recording your affirmations on your phone. Play one or more each morning, afternoon, and evening. Hearing your own voice can be incredibly powerful, especially on days when you feel discouraged.
- Believe in the Possibility: Affirmations won’t magically land you a job, but they will remind you of your worth and help you stay motivated when sending out applications or prepping for an interview.
If you’re skeptical, start small—maybe just one statement in the morning. You might be surprised at how your perspective shifts over time.
5. Network with Intention
We often think of networking as an optional extra, but in a competitive job search, it’s crucial. If you’re aiming for a higher-paying role, or hoping to find a remote position that truly fits your life, the right conversations can open unexpected doors. Here’s how to approach networking with confidence:
- Join Industry Groups: If you’re exploring a new field or pivoting, look for professional groups, online forums, or LinkedIn groups where you can learn about trends and meet potential contacts.
- Offer Value First: Comment thoughtfully on a person’s post or share a resource they might find helpful. Genuine engagement helps you stand out more than a generic “Please hire me” message.
- Be Clear About Your Goals: When you reach out to someone, be honest about what you’re looking for. Are you trying to learn about their company’s culture? Seeking insights on pivoting to their field? A well-defined question will get you better responses than a vague introduction.
Networking isn’t about tricking people into helping you. It’s about forming connections that could eventually lead to referrals, interviews, or valuable advice. And yes, small wins matter here, too. Even a short chat with someone in your desired industry can give you confidence—and might lead to bigger opportunities later.
I’ll leave you with this…
Job searching can be draining, but building confidence along the way makes it a whole lot more manageable. You don’t have to tackle everything at once—pick a strategy (like forming your hype squad or focusing on small wins) and see how it shifts your energy.
