Reconnecting with Your Professional Ambitions

career goals and advice May 27, 2024

At the beginning of each year and at various points throughout the year, many embark on a journey of self-improvement and personal growth, setting ambitious resolutions and career goals with well-meaning intentions. These goals often represent our aspirations for a more fulfilling professional life, but, as the months pass, it's not uncommon to find ourselves in a state of limbo, stuck in the execution phase or questioning whether these goals truly align with our desires...if we even remember the goals at all.

Is it just me?

Revisiting Your Career Goals

I believe the first step in understanding the importance of career goals is to revisit the objectives you previously set for yourself. These goals often revolve around advancement, skill acquisition, or career changes.

Now, ask yourself:

  • Are These Goals Truly Yours?
Many times, we adopt career objectives based on external influences. It might be what our family, friends, or society at large deem successful. The question is, do these goals resonate with your true desires? Are they a reflection of your passions and values? Take a moment to reevaluate whether your career goals are genuinely yours or if they've been imposed on you. This can be a challenging realization, but much-needed for sure.
  • Are They S.M.A.R.T. Goals?
As a reminder, S.M.A.R.T. goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Analyze your goals against these criteria. Are they clear and specific or are they vague? Can you measure your progress toward them? Are they realistically attainable? Do they align with your current life circumstances? Are there deadlines in place? If your goals don't meet these criteria, it might be time for a revision to help you get back on track. Grab your free printable by clicking HERE!
  • Do You Have an Accountability Partner?
An accountability partner can make a significant difference in your goal achievement. Whether it's a mentor, coach, or a trusted friend, having someone to share your goals with can provide motivation, guidance, and a sense of responsibility. If you haven't enlisted an accountability partner, consider doing so now.

We're here to help with all three. Learn more about our Career Clarity Consultation, by clicking HERE

The Significance of Career Goals

Now, let's chat about why I believe career goals are so important.

  • Guiding Your Journey
Career goals serve as a compass, providing direction and purpose to your professional life. They help you make choices that align with your ambitions, ensuring you stay on a path that leads to deeper personal and career fulfillment.
  • Measuring Progress
Setting clear, measurable goals allows you to track your advancement. It's like marking milestones on your journey; each accomplishment reinforces your sense of achievement and motivates you to continue striving. Might I also challenge you to celebrate each of these milestones?
  • Boosting Motivation
Ambitious goals can be incredibly motivating. They give you a reason to wake up excited every single day, knowing you're working toward something significant that YOU deemed important in your life. This motivation can be a powerful driver of success.
  • Fostering Resilience
The pursuit of career goals often involves overcoming obstacles and setbacks. I have yet to accomplish a career goal that didn't leave me questioning (at least once) if it was even worth it. These challenges build resilience, teaching you to adapt, learn, and persevere in the face of adversity.
  • Creating Accountability
When you set career goals, you create a level of accountability to yourself. You're more likely to take action and make necessary changes to ensure you achieve what you've set out to do.

Tools and Resources for Goal Achievement

If you're feeling stuck or uncertain about your career goals, then you're in the right place! There are tools and resources available to help you gain clarity and make progress.

  • Self-Reflection: Begin by journaling (you can find my favorite journals here) or meditating on your career aspirations. What truly excites you and why? What are your core values and why? What do you want to achieve in your professional life and why? Need a little help? Grab your free printable by clicking HERE!
  • SWOT Analysis: Conduct a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) to assess your current position and what might be holding you back. This is a practice you should implement each time you set a new goal. And, as you might have imagined by now, I've created a free printable you can download HERE!
  • Skills Assessment: Identify the skills and qualifications needed to achieve your goals. Are there gaps in your skill set that require development? Begin to think about how you can attain those skills.
  • Networking: Connect with professionals who have achieved similar goals or have experience in your desired field. They can provide insights, guidance, and potentially even mentorship. It never hurts to ask and, if they are unavailable, then there's a chance they'll know someone who can chat with you.
  • Coaching and Consultation: Consider partnering with a career coach or consultant. They can offer personalized guidance, help you refine your goals, and create an actionable plan.
